Using the Online Data Dictionary

The online data dictionary provides information on survey variables, constructed variables, and administrative variables. The data dictionary can be used to browse variables by topic, or search variables by name, keyword, or question number.

To Search by:

Variable Name - Enter all or part of a variable name in the "For:" field and select "Search By: Variable". The variable name query will search for all variables that begin with or match the specified text. For example, a search on the variable JAFDC will find JAFDC, JAFDCAMT, and JAFDCF. Alternatively, to find all variables in a particular data set, leave the "For:" field blank, select the data set of interest from the "Data Set:" drop-down box, and click "Search."

Keyword - Enter a keyword in the "For:" field and select "Search By: Keyword". The keyword query will search an index of variable names, labels, question text, and descriptions for the specified word or words. Use the words "AND" or "OR" between keywords, unless searching for a phrase. Try using the wildcard character * (asterisk) to match zero or many characters, such as "employ*" to match employ, employer, employment, etc.

Question Number - Enter a question number in the "For:" field and select "Search By: Question Number". The submitted query will search for question numbers that begin with, match, or contain the text entered. This search will only return variables associated with question numbers (constructed and administrative variables generally do not have question numbers).

Note
When changes in documentation are made, the online data dictionary is generally updated before a revised set of PDF codebooks are re-released. If you have questions about differences between the online data dictionary and the PDF codebooks, please contact us.
